Medical training and career history:
Born in Freiburg / Breisgau in 1944
Abitur at the secondary school in Ettlingen. Afterwards practical training in different machine factories and start of Mechanical Engineering studies at the Technical University Berlin-Charlottenburg in 1963. Intermediate diploma in 1966. Assistant at the institute for thermodynamics of the TU Munich in 1966. Started of study of medicine at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich in the same year.
1969: Start of an experimental doctoral thesis with the subject of “xeno-transplantation” at the institute for surgical research of the LMU.
1972: Completion of doctoral thesis and degree in medicine with grading summa cum laude and very good, respectively.
1972: US degree
1973: license to practice medicine, resident physician at the Institute for Surgical Research and the Institute for Pathology of the LMU within the framework of the special research field of the Federal Republic of Germany. Start of surgical training at the LMU (Professor Zenker). Continuing surgical training at the Mt. Sinai Hospital, USA (Professor Berk) as resident of surgery. Continuing medical training at the UCLA (Professor Kaufmann) as resident of urology. Degree as specialist for urology at the LMU Munich (Prof. Schmiedt).
1979: Specialist for urology and start of state doctorate at the Urological University Clinic of the LMU and the Institute for Surgical Research of the LMU
1981: State doctorate and appointment as Assistant Professor.
In February 1984, I was appointed chairman of the dptm. of urology Klinikum Bogenhausen StK Munich.
1994: Appointment as “Apl. Professor” for urology at the LMU. During the same year I received the qualification “Specialist for Urological Surgery” from the Bavarian medical association.
Due to my occupational commitment I was appointed spokesperson of the surgical centre of the city hospital Munich Bogenhausen in 1998.
In 2000, I was elected spokesperson of all chief physicians at the city hospital corporation.
After the expiry of my employment contract, the Institute for Urology / Urological Private Practice Prof. Albrecht Schilling, MD and Bernd Eck, MD was founded at the Isar Medicine Centre.
I have been a member of the German Association of Urology (DGU), the occupational union of German urologists, the European Association of Urology (EAU) and the American Association of Urology (AUA) for many years. To intensify the international professional exchange I was visiting physician at the UCLA, the USC and Stanford University, amongst others.
Milestones in research and at the Dept. of Urology are:
- Development of a new technology for renal conservation which can be applied in organ-preserving renal tumor surgery, e.g.
- In July 1983, our first bladder substitute was constructed from small intestine.
- In 1984, we established BCG immunotherapy based on the scheme of D. Lamm for recurrence prophylaxis in carcinoma of the bladder
- In 1986, the neobladder technique was modified by prostate sparing and potency preserving surgery.
Bernd Eck, MD
Urology specialist

Medical training and career:
Born in Aschaffenburg in 1956
After finishing school with the Abitur in Munich I studied Electrical Engineering at the TU Munich. After military service I began studying human medicine in Italy and passed my degree at the LMU Munich; I received the license to practice medicine within the same year.
Initially, I started training as a surgeon before I changed to urology 5 years later and received my qualification as Specialist for Urology in 1997. Since 1999, I have been working as a senior physician at the urological clinic of the hospital Landshut with a focus on minimally invasive (laparoscopic) and reconstructive surgical techniques.
In 2009, the Institute for Urology / Urological Private Practice at the Isar Medical Centre was founded together with Prof. Albrecht Schilling, MD.
